#2: [mtg_card]Aerial Responder[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1WW

Creature - Dwarf Soldier

Flying, vigilance, lifelink

2/3

TCGP MP: $0.26

Hidsnake: Pretty good limited card. It’s [mtg_card]Vampire Nighthawk[/mtg_card] without deathtouch, therefore not as good.

Tok: But it is a dwarf which trumps all other arguments I think.

#3: [mtg_card]Aetherstorm Roc[/mtg_card] - Rare

2WW

Creature - Bird

Flying

Whenever Aetherstorm Roc or another creature enters the battlefield under your control, you get E.

Whenever Aetherstorm Roc attacks, you may pay EE. If you do, put a +1/+1 counter on it and tap up to one target creature defending player controls.

3/3

TCGP MP: $0.42

Hidsnake: Three toughness is rough. But this can single handedly take control of a game. Might be the best card you can get in limited. Hard to tell if will get play in Standard. At under $1.50 a set, might be worth a low risk buy.

Tok: So I imagine this card gets played with other ways to make energy earlier than turn four to fully make use of it’s ability. You only need one more E to protect it from 3 damage removal on the turn it comes into play since it creates an E itself when it enters the battlefield. Works well with token generators such as [mtg_card]Nissa, Voice of Zendikar[/mtg_card] and I expect it could be a tool for GW midrange decks. The tap target creature is really nice to have on the evasive body.

#4: [mtg_card]Angel of Invention[/mtg_card] - Mythic

3WW

Creature - Angel

Flying, vigilance, lifelink

Fabricate 2

Other Creatures you control get +1/+1.

2/1

TCGP MP: $3.87

Hidsnake: Three toughness again. Lots of text though. Drops 4 power and an anthem. These all feel like powerful things. But 5CMC...not feeling it. Unless going wide is a top tier strategy, I don’t have high hopes. I do think Commander fans will have fun with this.

Tok: [mtg_card]Alesha, Who Smiles at Death[/mtg_card] can reanimate either a 4/3 flying, vigilance, lifelink or a 2/1 flying, vigilance, lifelink and two 2/2 servator tokens. I wish the tokens had flying, but since they don’t I’m going to say it’s probably not gonna make it to Standard outside of a 1-2 of in some token decks trying to go wide.

Hidsnake: This does a lot. It’s practically an entire tokens suite in a single card. But is easy to kill. And at 5CMC, that’s not a good thing.

#5: [mtg_card]Authority of the Consuls[/mtg_card] - Rare

W

Enchantment

Creatures your opponents control enter the battlefield tapped.

Whenever a creature enters the battlefield under an opponent’s control, you gain 1 life.

TCGP MP: $1.32

Hidsnake: Good bit of ink bled about this card. I disagree with all of it. It is wasting your first turn if you think playing this will save you. It is not Modern tech and there is no reason to suspect it has play in Standard.

Tok: It’s 1 generic mana cheaper than [mtg_card]Blind Obedience[/mtg_card] so it may see play as sideboard tech against [mtg_card]Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker[/mtg_card] decks. Maybe in an aggro deck in standard to delay blockers a turn, but honestly I don’t think Blind Obedience is being used against Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker decks currently so I don’t see why this would…

Hidsnake: The only way I expect to see this card is in sideboards if blitz style aggro decks become a thing in Standard.

#9: [mtg_card]Cataclysmic Gearhulk[/mtg_card] - Mythic

3WW

Artifact Creature - Construct

Vigilance

When Cataclysmic Gearhulk enters the battlefield, each player chooses from among the non-land permanents he or she controls an artifact, a creature, an enchantment, and a planeswalker, then sacrifices the rest.

4/5

TCGP MP: $5.94

Hidsnake: Tragic Arrogance on a stick, just not as good. Each player gets to to choose what they keep. It’s ok in that it has a body and keep the board small, but relying on it as targeted removal is a mistake. I think it will see play in Standard, but probably not as much as people think. I see it as more popular for Commander, where it causes some chaos. Can’t see it holding current price.

Tok: I on the other hand know it will see play in Standard, any gearhulk with an [mtg_card]Eldrazi Displacer[/mtg_card] is going to be hard to deal with and this gearhulk may be the best of them in Standard. The fact that he is an artifact himself means you can save your gearhulk and another creature, such as Eldrazi Displacer.

Hidsnake: But this is really only good against decks going wide. How often is this going to hit anything but a creature or two? It also will never kill the creature you want it to kill. I’m not sure how valuable that will be outside a tokens matchup.

#12: [mtg_card]Eddytrail Hawk[/mtg_card] - Common

1W

Creature - Bird

Flying

When Eddytrail Hawk enters the battlefield you get EE.

Whenever Eddytrail Hawk attacks, you may pay E. If you do, another target attacking creature gains flying until end of turn.

1/2

TCGP MP: $0.10

Hidsnake: Sneaky good in limited. Can build energy counters and give something evasion.

#13: [mtg_card]Fairgrounds Warden[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

2W

Creature - Dwarf Soldier

When Fairgrounds Warden enters the battlefield, exile target creature an opponent control until Fairgrounds Warden leaves the battlefield.

1/3

TCGP MP: $0.12

Hidsnake: Functional reprint gunna functional reprint. Shame it’s not a human. Would get great synergy on curve with [mtg_card]Thalia’s Lieutenant[/mtg_card].

Tok: DWARF! (Your argument is invalid)

#15: [mtg_card]Fumigate[/mtg_card] - Rare

3WW

Sorcery

Destroy all creatures. You gain 1 life for each creature destroyed this way.

TCGP MP: $2.03

Hidsnake: [mtg_card]Planar Outburst[/mtg_card] is better.

Tok: How about in the [mtg_card]Felidar Sovereign[/mtg_card] deck? I’ll go home now.

Hidsnake: Ok, on second thought this is a fine sweeper. Better against aggro than Planar Outburst.

#16: [mtg_card]Gearshift Ace[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1W

Creature - Dwarf Pilot

First Strike

Whenever Gearshift Ace crews a Vehicle, that Vehicle gains first strike until end of turn.

2/1

TCGP MP: $0.12

Hidsnake: Should be a default in aggressive vehicle heavy decks. A two power first strike at 2CMC is always reasonable in limited and might even be Standard playable.

#21: [mtg_card]Master Trinketeer[/mtg_card] - Rare

2W

Creature - Dwarf Artificer

Servo and thopter creatures you control get +1/+1.

3W: Create a 1/1 colorless Servo artifact creature token.

3/2

TCGP MP: $0.44

Hidsnake: Lords have not done well lately in Standard. Each one Wizards pushes has been ignored. This one can make his own tokens, but I don’t see how he fits in the grand scheme of things. That said, $1 a set doesn’t seem like a bad wager here. Low risk, high reward.

Tok: He depends on how good servos are. [mtg_card]Hangarback Walker[/mtg_card] blowing up would be scary(er?) with this guy out. I wish he was more defensive, a 3/2 body is pretty weak against damage removal.

Hidsnake: Sure. If Hangerback Walker was Standard legal anymore.

Tok: That’s my point. There aren’t many things in standard that make thopters right now, so this guy is effectively just the lord of the servos. Much less impressive, really.

#25: [mtg_card]Refurbish[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

3W

Sorcery

Return target artifact card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

TCGP MP: $0.14

Hidsnake: An artifact reanimator? Who wanted this? I’m sure some casual/Commander fan will go ham with this.

Tok: Sorcery speed can’t reanimate [mtg_card]Blightsteel Colossus[/mtg_card] so what’s the point? [mtg_card]Darksteel Forge[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]Platinum Angel[/mtg_card]? Tron? Does Tron want an artifact reanimator?

Hidsnake: Why? Tron doesn’t play any artifacts worth reanimating. /shrug.

Tok: I didn’t think so. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#29: [mtg_card]Skywhaler’s Shot[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

2W

Instant

Destroy target creature with power 3 or greater. Scry 1.

TCGP MP: $0.12

Hidsnake: Solid limited removal.

#32: [mtg_card]Toolcraft Exemplar[/mtg_card] - Rare

W

Creature - Dwarf Artificer

At the beginning of combat on your turn, if you control an artifact, Toolcraft Exemplar gains +2/+1 until end of turn. If you control three or more artifacts, it also gains first strike until end of turn.

1/1

TCGP MP: $1.83

Tok: [mtg_card]Captain’s Claws[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]Sigil of Valor[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]Skeleton Key[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]Sword of the Animist[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]BONE SAW[/mtg_card]? Okay maybe not that last one, but you see where I am going with this little dwarf. There are many equipment cards that can make the 1/1 into 3/2 on turn two.

Hidsnake: IDK. I’m hard pressed to think of a deck that could play both artifact and be aggro. Maybe equipment? But is there really enough equipment out there to do that?

#34: [mtg_card]Visionary Augmenter[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

2WW

Fabricate 2

2/1

TCGP MP: $0.10

Hidsnake: Essentially [mtg_card]Angel of Invention[/mtg_card] at 4CMC without any text. Now this might be more playable in a go wide deck at the reduced mana cost.

#39: [mtg_card]Aethersquall Ancient[/mtg_card] - Rare

5UU

Creature - Leviathan

Flying

At the beginning of your upkeep, you get EEE.

Pay EEEEEEEE: Return all other creatures to their owner's hands. Activate this ability only any time you could cast a sorcery.

6/6

MTGP MP: $0.19

Tok: [mtg_card]Thing in the Ice[/mtg_card] does it better.

#40: [mtg_card]Ceremonious Rejection[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

U

Instant

Counter target colorless spell.

TCGP MP: $0.66

Tok: I think this mainly helps against eldrazi in Modern.

Hidsnake: I agree. This card is more about Modern than anything else. My guess is that it was a throw in during The Great Eldrazi Winter and they just kept it anyway.

#45: [mtg_card]Era of Innovation[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1U

Enchantment

Whenever an artifact or Artificer enters the battlefield under your control, you may pay 1. If you do, you get EE.

Pay EEEEEE, Sacrifice Era of Innovation: Draw three cards.

TCGP MP: $0.14

Hidsnake: If energy counters is a thing, expect to see quite a bit of this card. This card could be the [mtg_card]Tireless Tracker[/mtg_card] of this set, just without the beatdowns. This is probably as good an outlet you will find for energy counters.

#50: [mtg_card]Glint-Nest Crane[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1U

Creature - Bird

Flying

When Glin-Nest Crane enters the battlefield, look at the top four cards of your library. You may reveal an artifact from among them and put it into your hand. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.

1/3

TCGP MP: $0.15

Tok: Good blocker against [mtg_card]Sylvan Advocate[/mtg_card] or other 2/x creatures early and replaces itself in artifact heavy decks. Will probably see play.

Hidsnake: Ya, that’s why I put it into the list. It’s quite good. Flying version of [mtg_card]Augur of Bolas[/mtg_card]. Blocks well and digs for cards.

#56: [mtg_card]Metallurgic Summonings[/mtg_card] - Mythic

3UU

Enchantment

Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, create an X/X colorless Construct artifact creature token, where X is that spell's converted mana cost.

3UU, Exile Metallurgic Summonings: Return all instant and sorcery cards from your graveyard to your hand. Activate this ability only if you control six or more artifacts.

TCGP MP: $1.71

Hidsnake: I’ve seen quite a few takes on this card. Most very positive. I’m sure someone will at least try to combo it out in Standard, and in my opinion, might even be successful. But in Commander? This will drive this card crazy. It does everything anyone ever wanted. Have this in play and cast [mtg_card]Lingering Souls[/mtg_card]. So many tokens. SO MANY TOKENS. At under $2 a pop, not a bad buy.

Tok: How do you keep track of the constructs power and toughness? With pre-release D20 dice of course! I see what you’ve done here Wizards, I see your angle, I’m on to you...

Hidsnake: ...

#59: [mtg_card]Padeem, Consul of Innovation[/mtg_card] - Rare

3U

Legendary Creature - Vealkin Artificer

Artifacts you control have hexproof.

At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control the artifact with the highest converted mana cost or tied for the highest converted mana cost, draw a card.

1/4

TCGP MP: $0.31

Tok: I guess he can draw you cards? I would never expect to have the highest CMC artifact so basically he gives hexproof to artifacts and is a 1/4 for 4CMC? Meh.

Hidsnake: No reason I see this in Standard. But is certainly a Commander special.

#65: [mtg_card]Tezzeret’s Ambition[/mtg_card] - Common

3UU

Sorcery

Draw three cards. If you control no artifacts, discard a card.

TCGP MP: $0.10

Hidsnake: This isn’t a terrible draw spell actually. In super heavy control artifact decks, this could be a thing.

#67: [mtg_card]Torrential Gearhulk[/mtg_card] - Mythic

4UU

Artifact Creature - Construct

Flash

When Torrential Gearhulk enters the battlefield, you may cast target instant card from your graveyard without paying its mana cost. If that card would be put into your graveyard this turn, exile it instead.

5/6

TGCP MP: $8.06

Tok: Talking about this BIG Artifact Creature will be a snap! I’m sure he’s the talk of all the pro MTG casters. You don’t have to be a 2/1 Mage with flash to know this guy is good! Seriously though this guy may get play in Modern. In some decks [mtg_card]Snapcaster Mage[/mtg_card] doesn’t see play until turn 5 or 6 and a 5/6 body is definitely more formidable than a 2/1 as a surprise blocker. Sure Snapcasters can be played as early as turn 3 to cast a [mtg_card]Path to Exile[/mtg_card] or a [mtg_card]Lightning Bolt[/mtg_card] from the grave, but in decks that are currently only running 1-2 Snaps Torrential Gearhulk may be a better option. Also, mandatory Eldrazi Displacer name drop.

Hidsnake: Mandatory Eldrazi Displacer name drop could not be more true with this card. How broken would a card be if it let you cast any instant/sorcery from your grave for 3 mana? That card is Yawgmoth's Will. SO VERY BROKEN.

Hidsnake: Ok, late re-review. I doubt this will get into Modern, it just cost way too much mana and only flashbacks instants. But this thing is absurd in control decks for Standard where it could be the only creature in the deck and a 4x. You know this can flashback [mtg_card]Confirm Suspicions[/mtg_card]? Uhg. This could go north of $10.

#73: [mtg_card]Demon of Dark Schemes[/mtg_card] - Mythic

3BBB

Creature - Demon

Flying

When Demon of Dark Schemes enters the battlefield, all other creatures get -2/-2 until the end of turn.

Whenever another creature dies, get E.

2B, Pay EEEE: Put target creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control tapped.

5/5

TCGP MP: $2.77

Hidsnake: I’m pretty high on this card. Mostly because it is self-sustaining. You can have one in play, reanimate another from the graveyard, and all the E counters for wiping the board. At 6CMC and triple B, this is hard to play. It is also competing with [mtg_card]Noxious Gearhulk[/mtg_card], which is probably straight up better. So while I like it, there are probably better cards unless you are running a graveyard strategy.

Tok: Pretty cheap for a mythic with board clear potential.

#79: [mtg_card]Embraal Bruiser[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1B

Creature - Human Warrior

Embraal Bruiser enters the battlefield tapped.

Embraal Bruiser has menace as long as you control an artifact.

3/1

TCGP MP: $0.11

Hidsnake: Three power with menace at 2CMC is really good for aggro.

#85: [mtg_card]Harsh Scrutiny[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

B

Sorcery

Target opponent reveals his or her hand. You choose a creature card from it. That player discards that card. Scry 1.

TCGP MP: $0.28

Tok: You get a lot of valuable info for one measly B with this card and you have the potential to rip a problematic critter. Thats a Win-Win-Win!

Hidsnake: This gives a scry? Why? Makes this feel so overpowered.

Tok: Yeah, that’s a bit much.

#90: [mtg_card]Marionette Master[/mtg_card] - Rare

4BB

Creature - Human Artificer

Fabricate 3

Whenever an artifact you control is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, target opponent loses life equal to Marionette Master’s power.

1/3

TCGP MP: $0.31

Hidsnake: I think my [mtg_card]Disciple of the Vault[/mtg_card] PTSD has been triggered.

Tok: I wish fabricate did both the things…As it stands, choice of a 4/6 or 4 doods with 1 power is nice actually. May find a home as a one or two of in standard, but I think it’s going to be meh.

#94: [mtg_card]Noxious Gearhulk[/mtg_card] - Mythic

4BB

Artifact Creature - Construct

Menace

When Noxious Gearhulk enters the battlefield, you may destroy another target creature. If a creature is destroyed this way, you gain life equal to it’s toughness.

5/4

TCGP MP: $6.30

Hidsnake: I got 2 words for ya. [mtg_card]Eldrazi Displacer[/mtg_card]. This thing is batshit crazy. I think is probably underpriced at $5. Should be a standard staple for it’s entire duration. I doubt we will see it outside Standard, but damn will it wreck Standard while it’s here.

Tok: Menace is nice, but I wish it had a bigger butt. Shouldn’t matter too much with the [mtg_card]Murder[/mtg_card] on a stick thing he has going for him. Mandatory Eldrazi Displacer namedrop.

Hidsnake: Menace is a nice keyword on small things, but not so much big things. Basically means it’s hard to chump.

#101: [mtg_card]Syndicate Trafficker[/mtg_card] - Rare

1B

Creature - Aetherborn Rogue

1, Sacrifice an artifact: Put a +1/+1 counter on Syndicate Trafficker. It gains indestructible until end of turn.

3/1

TCGP MP: $0.51

Tok: I think the 1 mana cost on the activated ability kills the card for me. In the right build it’s kind of a mini-[mtg_card]Falkenrath Aristocrat[/mtg_card], but worse because of the lack of evasion and the sacrificial lamb card type being harder for an aggro game plan. Artifact vs. creature sacrifice type is probably why it only costs 1B.

Hidsnake: Still might be workable. I agree, it isn’t Falkenrath Aristocrat. But it still a 3/1 that can be made indestructible at will. It is a build around. How good it is will depend on the decks that can be built to the ability.

#107: [mtg_card]Brazen Scourge[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1RR

Creature - Gremlin

Haste

3/3

TCGP MP: $0.11

Tok: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hidsnake: Is a 3/3 haste for 3CMC any good? I suppose?

#109: [mtg_card]Cathartic Reunion[/mtg_card] - Common

1R

Sorcery

As an additional cost to cast Cathartic Reunion, discard two cards.

Draw three cards.

TCGP MP: $0.10

Tok: I put this on here because it’s basically a better [mtg_card]Tormenting Voice[/mtg_card] in Dredge.

Hidsnake: This is bad. Dredge has better things to do.

Tok: You will sometimes see 1-2 Tormenting Voice in Modern Dredge lists and this is pretty much better so… Yeah.

Hidsnake: One trades 2 cards for 2 cards, the other trades 3 cards for 3 cards. The value is the similar, but dumping 2 cards is much easier than ditching 3. I think it’s all moot. Dredge shouldn’t need more than sets of [mtg_card]Faithless Looting[/mtg_card] unless they are doing something crazy.

#110: [mtg_card]Chandra, Torch of Defiance[/mtg_card] - Mythic

2RR

Planeswalker - Chandra

[+1]: Exile the top card of your library. You may cast that card. If you don't, Chandra, Torch of Defiance deals 2 damage to each opponent.

[+1]: Add RR to your mana pool.

[-3]: Chandra, Torch of Defiance deals 4 damage to target creature.

[-7]: You get an emblem with "Whenever you cast a spell, this emblem deals 5 damage to target creature or player."

Loyalty: 4

TCGP MP: $40.47

Hidsnake: This is pretty much the most I’ve ever seen a new Planeswalker go on prerelease. But let’s get one thing clear, there is a reason for that. This is probably the best Planeswalker the Wizards has printed since [mtg_card]Liliana of the Veil[/mtg_card]. If will define Standard and probably will find a home in Modern (Jund). But is it worth $45? Probably not. But I can’t see this card under $25. It could feasibly even hold at $30-$35.

Tok: Oh look, its Chandra, Mind Sculpter. Just…just buy a playset I guess.

Hidsnake: Don’t tell people that. Not like it will see play in Legacy...right?

#120: [mtg_card]Inventor's Apprentice[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

R

Creature - Human Artificer

Inventor's Apprentice gets +1/+1 as long as you control an artifact.

1/2

TCGP MP: $0.26

Hidsnake: Pretty good T1 threat if you can drop an artifact on T2.

Tok: Ehem, “[mtg_card]Captain’s Claws[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]Sigil of Valor[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]Skeleton Key[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]Sword of the Animist[/mtg_card]? [mtg_card]BONE SAW[/mtg_card]? Okay maybe not that last one, but you see where I am going with this little human. There are many equipment cards that can make the 1/2 a 2/3 on turn two.”

Hidsnake: Bum. Way to copy/paste points you have already said.

Tok: That’s just how I roll.

#122: [mtg_card]Madcap Experiment[/mtg_card] - Rare

3R

Sorcery

Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal an artifact card. Put that card onto the battlefield and the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order. Madcap Experiment deals damage to you equal to the number of cards revealed this way.

TCGP MP: $0.53

Tok: CCCCombo. [mtg_card]Darksteel Colossus[/mtg_card] fetch.

Hidsnake: But then you die. And it doesn’t have haste.

Tok: But then you COULD die. It’s a Madcap Experiment not a Sanecap Procedure. Regardless, you mentioned in chat the other creature you could combo with would be [mtg_card]Platinum Emperion[/mtg_card] since he negates the damage Madcap Experiment does on resolution.

Hidsnake: One day I'll use Sanecap Procedure in a sentence and I'll want you to bask in awe.

#124: [mtg_card]Pia Nalaar[/mtg_card] - Rare

2R

Legendary Creature - Human Artificer

When Pia Nalaar enters the battlefield, create a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying.

1R: Target artifact creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn.

1, Sacrifice an artifact: Target creature can't block this turn.

2/2

TCGP MP: $0.83

Hidsnake: If [mtg_card]Pia and Kiran Nalaar[/mtg_card] is good enough to get play, I suppose this is as well. But this is probably more aggro oriented, while the former is more about stabilizing the board.

Tok: Wow, so Kiran is only worth R? Wtf Wizards? Can’t wait to call the flavor judge over for a legend rule discussion if both Pia Nalaar and Pia and Kiran Nalaar are in play. More seriously though, I don’t know if this will get play. Maybe? Seems bad.

Hidsnake: I don’t really know. For what it does it seems good and fair. But I’m not sure how useful the abilities even are in a Standard environment.

Tok: It’s a worse [mtg_card]Thopter Engineer[/mtg_card].

Hidsnake: Ouch. Hottaek.

#130: [mtg_card]Skyship Stalker[/mtg_card] - Rare

2RR

Creature - Dragon

Flying

R: Skyship Stalker gets +1/+0 until end of turn.

R: Skyship Stalker gains first strike until end of turn.

R: Skyship Stalker gains haste until end of turn.

3/3

TCGP MP: $0.26

Hidsnake: At three toughness, this is probably bad. But it’s hard for me to shoot down something that has flying, haste, and firebreathing for range. Add in first strike and I really don’t know.

#132: [mtg_card]Speedway Fanatic[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1R

Creature - Human Pilot

Haste

Whenever Speedway Fanatic crews a Vehicle, that Vehicle gains haste until end of turn.

2/1

TCGP MP: $0.10

Hidsnake: Most of the vehicles are pretty big. You could really ambush someone hard with this thing. Makes [mtg_card]Skysovereign, Consul Flagship[/mtg_card] quite terrifying if it can attack the turn you play it.

Tok: He is a human. Why is he a human? You have a dwarf vehicle lord and this is what you give us? Do you even like tribes anymore Wizard?

#142: [mtg_card]Arborback Stomper[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

3GG

Creature - Beast

Trample

When Arborback Stomper enters the battlefield, you gain 5 life.

5/4

TCGP MP: $0.09

Hidsnake: HEEEEEERE’S [mtg_card]THRAGTUSK[/mtg_card]!

Tok: I’ll have my 3/3 beast now.

#146: [mtg_card]Blossoming Defense[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

G

Instant

Target creature you control gets +2/+2 and gains hexproof until end of turn.

TCGP MP: $0.30

Hidsnake: Why would anyone print this? Screw you Wizards. It is anti-fun to play with card that give both a buff and evasion.

Tok: Strictly better [mtg_card]Ranger’s Guile[/mtg_card]? The only good news is that it’s still not better than [mtg_card]Vines of Vastwood[/mtg_card] so infect players don’t need to change their decks! Wait, did I say good news?

Hidsnake: Just stop. Please, just stop.

Tok: But, I like counting to 10...

#147: [mtg_card]Bristling Hydra[/mtg_card] - Rare

2GG

Creature - Hydra

When Bristling Hydra enters the battlefield, you get EEE.

Pay EEE: Put a +1/+1 counter on Bristling Hydra. It gains hexproof until end of turn.

4/3

TCGP MP: $0.85

Hidsnake: I think this is good (Question Mark?). A built in evasion on a creature of this size often proves to be a problem.

Tok: It is a 4 mana 4/3 with a built in [mtg_card]Ranger’s Guile[/mtg_card]. I think that’s pretty good. It is at a problematic CMC for standard play. You could pick up a set for cheap, but that is where I think it will stay. <$1.00 … Oh, yeah! [mtg_card]Eldrazi Displacer[/mtg_card]. I’ll let you mull that one over.

Hidsnake: Why would Eldrazi Displacer be good with this? With Displacer you get evasion. This has built in evasion. What are you gaining that is worth any value?

Tok: More EEE for [mtg_card]Era of Innovation[/mtg_card] or [mtg_card]Aetherworks Marvel[/mtg_card]? It’s something to consider, it’s not necessarily good…This is a less than $1.00 card after all.

Hidsnake: Ok. I’ll give you that.

#152: [mtg_card]Dubious Challenge[/mtg_card] - Rare

3G

Sorcery

Look at the top ten cards of your library, exile up to two target creature cards from among them, then shuffle your library. Target opponent may choose one of the exiled cards and put into the battlefield under his or her control. Put the rest onto the battlefield under your control.

TCGP MP: $0.25

Tok: Your opponent will always choose the better creature. Always. If you can find a way to make your opponent cast it it’s really good. (No it’s not. It’s garbage. Prerelease hype can’t even inflate the price it’s so bad.)

Hidsnake: There are a surprising number of ways to regain control of your cards out there. This could come up in Commander decks with cards like [mtg_card]Homeward Path[/mtg_card]. The cards in Magic just don't exist yet for this to be relevant outside of Commander.

#161: [mtg_card]Longtusk Cub[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1G

Creature - Cat

Whenever Longtusk Cub deal combat damage to a player, you get EE.

Pay EE: Put a +1/+1 counter on Longtusk Cub.

2/2

TCGP MP: $0.12

Hidsnake: This is a sneaky good card. You kinda have to contest it or else it will become a significant problem. Don’t think it will be a player in Standard, but might not be a bad mid-round pick in draft.

Tok: This card builds. It builds board presence with +1/+1 counters and once it is large enough it just builds energy for later cards.

#163: [mtg_card]Nissa, Vital Force[/mtg_card] - Mythic

3GG

Planeswalker - Nissa

[+1]: Untap target land you control. Until your next turn, it becomes a 5/5 Elemental creature with haste. It's still a land.

[-3]: Return target permanent card from your graveyard to your hand.

[-6]: You get an emblem with "Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you may draw a card."

Loyalty: 5

TCGP MP: $19.04

Hidsnake: This is really good. Like really, really good. Might actually be better in Standard than [mtg_card]Chandra, Torch of Defiance[/mtg_card]. Doesn’t have the possible Modern play Chandra does, but this card never really stops being a problem in the long game. With one in grave and one in play, you can endless return the one from the graveyard to your hand and still have the original in play. The +1 is both a defensive tool and an offensive tool. And the ultimate can be done the turn after she hits the field (or on the turn in the case of having [mtg_card]Oath of Gideon[/mtg_card] in play). While it’s not game winning, it’s probably going to be a lot easier to out-resource your opponent with it. I think $10-$12 dollar is a fair buy. Hell, $15 doesn’t even look that bad.

Tok: I would say ultimating ASAP is almost always in your best interest. Every land drawing cards is nuts, [mtg_card]Evolving Wilds[/mtg_card] draws 2 cards for you, and any ramp spell becomes card draw as well. Just a really good emblem to have.

Hidsnake: Slamming the -3 seems just as good to me. It’s like playing [mtg_card]Den Protector[/mtg_card] but with more value. All the abilities look good here, which is the sign that the card is probably good.

#165: [mtg_card]Oviya Pashiri, Sage Lifecrafter[/mtg_card] - Rare

G

Legendary Creature - Human Artificer

2G, T: Create a 1/1 colorless Servo artifact creature token.

4G, T: Create an X/X colorless Construct artifact creature token, where X is the number of creatures you control.

1/2

TCGP MP: $0.46

Tok: Yeah… Why?

Hidsnake: Commander fodder.

#172: [mtg_card]Verdurous Gearhulk[/mtg_card] - Mythic

3GG

Artifact Creature - Construct

Trample

When Verdurous Gearhulk enters the battlefield, distribute four +1/+1 counters among any number of target creatures you control.

4/4

TCGP MP: $14.82

Hidsnake: That’s a big’in. It’s gunna come down early and smash your face if you can’t answer it. Really exploded in price the past few days.

#176: [mtg_card]Cloudblazer[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

3WU

Creature - Human Scout

Flying

When Cloudblazer enters the battlefield, you gain 2 life and draw two cards.

2/2

TCGP MP: $0.16

Hidsnake: This is a card in limited that I would probably have like 5 of in my deck.

Tok: Do you like [mtg_card]Mulldrifter[/mtg_card]? This isn’t a Mulldrifter, but it’s trying to be. Pick it and play it.

#178: [mtg_card]Depala, Pilot Exemplar[/mtg_card] - Rare

1RW

Legendary Creature - Dwarf Pilot

Other Dwarves you control get +1/+1.

Each Vehicle you control gets +1/+1 as long as it's a creature.

Whenever Depala, Pilot Exemplar becomes tapped, you may pay X. If you do, reveal the top X cards of your library, put all Dwarf and Vehicle cards from among them into your hand, then put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

3/3

TCGP MP: $1.19

Hidsnake: I said earlier that the recent history of lords in Standard isn’t too good. But if vehicles is a thing, this will be a thing. This alone can crew all the important creatures and pump up the 2 power dwarfs to do the same.

Tok: DWARFS!

#179: [mtg_card]Dovin Baan[/mtg_card] - Mythic

2WU

Planeswalker - Dovin

[+1]: Until your next turn, up to one target creature gets -3/-0 and its activated abilities can't be activated.

[-1]: You gain 2 life and draw a card.

[-7]: You get an emblem with "Your opponents can't untap more than two permanents during their untap steps."

Loyalty: 3

TCGP MP: $11.41

Hidsnake: I don’t think he’s very good. Taking away activated abilities for a turn typical doesn’t do much because the opponent can activate them in reaction. Pretty bland Planeswalker to be honest.

Hidsnake: Giving a re-review. Some people are comparing this to [mtg_card]Narset Transcendent[/mtg_card] and could take slots that Narset took. The problem with that is Narset's ultimate is game ending in some matchups while Dovin Baan isn't. It's more likily his -1 just get's jammed over and over again. The other problem is that Narset comes down with 6 loyalty. That's almost impossible to kill on a counter attack the turn it comes down. Dovin? Not so sure.

#183: [mtg_card]Kambal, Consul of Allocation[/mtg_card] - Rare

1WB

Legendary Creature - Human Advisor

Whenever an opponent casts a noncreature spell, that player loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.

2/3

TCGP MP: $1.35

Hidsnake: That’s a hatebear. A pretty good one at that. I could see that in Modern to help fight against Delver and Burn matchups. It has a decent, but not great body, to block with. Not sure if it will see much play in Standard, but should fit easily into the Modern WB Hate. At $2 a pop, feel like a bit much to me through. Particularly when I don’t see the major impact on Standard.

#184: [mtg_card]Rashmi, Eternities Crafter[/mtg_card] - Mythic

2GU

Legendary Creature - Elf Druid

Whenever you cast your first spell each turn, reveal the top card of your library. if it's a nonland card with converted mana cost less than that spell's, you may cast it without paying its mana cost. if you don't cast the revealed card, put it into your hand.

2/3

TCGP MP: $3.79

Hidsnake: Pretty high price for a card that I don’t really think does much. Probably a fun Commander? Maybe?

Tok: All your spells are either a worse cascade or a worse cantrip. I think its a good ability, but the body and CMC hold it back. Synergises well with [mtg_card]Jori En, Ruin Diver[/mtg_card] for a casual fun RUG deck.

#186: [mtg_card]Saheeli Rai[/mtg_card] - Mythic

1UR

Planeswalker - Saheeli

[+1]: Scry 1. Saheeli Rai deals 1 damage to each opponent.

[-2]: Create a token that's a copy of target artifact or creature you control, except it's an artifact in addition to its other types. That token gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step.

[-7]: Search your library for up to three artifact cards with different names, put them onto the battlefield, then shuffle your library.

Loyalty: 3

TCGP MP: $12.01

Hidsnake: If there is anything I’ve learned from my time re-entering the realms of Magic, it’s that all 3CMC Planeswalkers are inherently broken and underestimate them at your own risk. I’ve already seen 3 different infinities with her making her an artifact then [mtg_card]Disciple of the Vault[/mtg_card] death-ing someone on T3 and another with [mtg_card]Sun Titan[/mtg_card] reanimation shenanigans to make an army of artifact Sun Titans with haste. This card doesn’t feel strong enough to show up in Standard. But some of these combos seem somewhat doable. It could very well be the next [mtg_card]Splinter Twin[/mtg_card] in the worst case scenario. This could be a $4 card, or a $25 Modern wrecking machine.

Tok: Sooooooooo, play Disciple of the Vault on turn one, play [mtg_card]Liquimetal Coating[/mtg_card] on turn two, and play Saheeli Rai on turn three then Liquimetal Coating her and -2 herself? That seems fun.

Hidsnake: Seems janky. It plays 2 cards that don’t do anything and are bad. I think the Sun Titan one might be more viable as Sun Titan is an actual card. We could see a return of Solar Flare in Magic.

Tok: How do you do the Sun Titan combo? You know in case the readers don’t know. I mean I know, obviously. Saw it immediately. As soon as the card was spoiled I spotted it… But just in case some poor soul DOESN’T know, could you walk through it real quick?

Hidsnake: One Saheeli Rai in graveyard, one in hand, and Sun Titan in play (There are a lot of setups for this, but I’ll use this as an example.). Play Saheeli Rai and use -2 to copy Sun Titan. Sun Titan trigger to reanimate the Saheeli Rai in the graveyard, sacing the Saheeli Rai you just played. Use -2 to copy Sun Titan. Rinse and repeat.

Tok: I think seeing how this card is broken will be fun. She slides nicely into Modern Jeskai Control lists. Her -2 on [mtg_card]Snapcaster Mage[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Reflector Mage[/mtg_card] is some sweet, sweet value. Sun Titan combo seems like the best one as he can sometimes be an oops I win card. You can do the combo with 2 Saheeli in the graveyard, can’t you?

Hidsnake: Yes. Yes you can. Pretty fun to try. Dunno if it fits into the current Jeskai Nahiri deck, but it could be a design of its own. I liken it to Splinter Twin because Splinter Twin can win games from an empty boardstate with two Saheelis in the grave and resolved Sun Titan, which is what I think got Twin banned in the first place.

#187: [mtg_card]Unlicensed Disintegration[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

1RB

Instant

Destroy target creature. If you control an artifact, Unlicensed Disintegration deals 3 damage to that creature's controller.

TCGP MP: $0.34

Hidsnake: Solid kill spell. Even Standard playable.

#188: [mtg_card]Veteran Motorist[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

RW

Creature - Dwarf Pilot

When Veteran Motorist enters the battlefield, scry 2.

Whenever Veteran Motorist crews a Vehicle, that Vehicle gets +1/+1 until end of turn.

3/1

TCGP MP: $0.19

Hidsnake: Good if vehicles are good.

Tok: I like the haste ability more, but this dude has 3 power which is much more relevant.

#189: [mtg_card]Voltaic Brawler[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

RG

Creature - Human Warrior

When Voltaic Brawlers enters the battlefield, you get EE.

Whenever Voltaic Brawler attacks, you may pay E. If you do, it gets +1/+1 and gains trample until end of turn.

3/2

TCGP MP: $0.62

Hidsnake: Solid aggro 2-drop.

#192: [mtg_card]Aetherflux Reservoir[/mtg_card] - Rare

4

Artifact

Whenever you cast a spell, you gain 1 life for each spell you’ve cast this turn.

Pay 50 life: Aetherflux Reservoir deals 50 damage to target creature or player.

TCGP MP: $1.20

Hidsnake: Keep an eye out for this. This gives lifegain decks a win condition, something all lifegain decks lack.

Tok: Yes, [mtg_card]Felidar Sovereign[/mtg_card] doesn’t do it apparently.

Hidsnake: Not at 50-thousand CMC.

Tok: You bashing Kitteh?

Hidsnake: Yes.

Tok: Monster.

#193: [mtg_card]Aetherworks Marvel[/mtg_card] - Mythic

4

Legendary Artifact

Whenever a permanent you control is put into a graveyard, you get E.

T, Pay EEEEEE: Look at the top six cards of your library. You may cast a card from among them without paying its mana cost. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order.

TCGP MP: $7.51

Tok: Maybe it’s good if you can get to EEEEEE on turn 4?

Hidsnake: Probably not.

#194: [mtg_card]Animation Module[/mtg_card] - Rare

1

Artifact

Whenever one or more +1/+1 counters are placed on a permanent you control, you may pay 1. If you do, create 1/1 colorless Servo artifact token

3, T: Choose a counter on target permanent or player. Give that permanent or player another counter of that kind.

TCGP MP: $0.82

Tok: I think this can hit planeswalkers with the second ability? Also depending on how energy works you can target yourself and increase energy by one maybe? Definitely works for poison counters, not that infect wants a 1 mana do nothing artifact. Makes all fabricate cards better, so it seems good in limited.

Hidsnake: This is awkwardly worded enough to probably do really weird things. Giving people more infect and loyalty counters is probably only the start.

Tok: [mtg_card]Azor's Elocutors[/mtg_card] get more filibuster counters. Creatures that level up get more level up counters. Ascensions get more quest counters.

Hidsnake: Ya, I suspect these are things people do in Commander. Particularly in a a [mtg_card]Vorel of the Hull Clade[/mtg_card] deck.

#200: [mtg_card]Chief of the Foundry[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

3

Artifact Creature - Construct

Other artifact creatures you control get +1/+1.

2/3

TCGP MP: $0.09

Hidsnake: Good time to reprint this card.

#203: [mtg_card]Cultivator's Caravan[/mtg_card] - Rare

3

Artifact - Vehicle

T: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.

Crew 3

5/5

TCGP MP: $0.94

Hidsnake: What a weird card.

Tok: It’s like the dragon statue mana rocks from Khans, but less useless... More useful? No, I'm sticking with less useless. I know that's wrong but it conveys my meaning better. There is [mtg_card]Lambholt Pacifist[/mtg_card] to turn it on to attack, or it can ramp into a 5 mana turn 4.

#212: [mtg_card]Filigree Familiar[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

3

Artifact Creature - Fox

When Filigree Familiar enters the battlefield, you gain 2 life.

When Filigree Familiar dies, draw a card.

2/2

TCGP MP: $0.63

Hidsnake: I’m glad you included this card. It’s actually good. Both in Standard and limited.

#214: [mtg_card]Fleetwheel Cruiser[/mtg_card] - Rare

4

Trample, haste

When Fleetwheel Cruiser enters the battlefield, it becomes an artifact creature until end of turn.

Crew 2

5/3

TCGP MP: $2.41

Tok: I wanted to talk about this one because it doesn’t need a creature to crew it the turn it comes down. Crew is bad on cards that don’t do something the turn they are played, this card is at least a [mtg_card]Ball Lightning[/mtg_card].

#215: [mtg_card]Foundry Inspector[/mtg_card] - Uncommon

3

Artifact Creature - Construct

Artifact spells you cast cost 1 less to cast.

3/2

TCGP MP: $0.19

Hidsnake: /panics

Tok: Cast three and the fourth is free.

#216: [mtg_card]Ghirapur Orrery[/mtg_card] - Rare

4

Artifact

Each player may play an additional land on each of his or her turns.

At the beginning of each player's upkeep, if that player has no cards in hand, that player draws three cards.

TCGP MP: $0.66

Hidsnake: Commander.

Tok: It’s [mtg_card]Howling Mine[/mtg_card] level of value the turn you play it, so yeah Commander.

#222: [mtg_card]Metalwork Colossus[/mtg_card] - Rare

11

Artifact Creature - Construct

Metalwork Colossus costs X less to cast, where X is the total converted mana cost of noncreature artifacts you control.

Sacrifice two artifacts: Return Metalwork Colossus from your graveyard to your hand.

10/10

TCGP MP: $1.17

Tok: On curve with [mtg_card]Skysovereign, Consul Flagship[/mtg_card] I guess. Eldrazi are better game enders right now.

Hidsnake: [mtg_card]Colossus of Akros[/mtg_card] is worth $1.50 and it was pretty easy to trade for cards that casuals don't even value (dual lands). This is pretty much the same card in the respect it's gigantic. Keep in you binders for trades.

#226: [mtg_card]Panharmonicon[/mtg_card] - Rare

4

Artifact

If an artifact or creature entering the battlefield causes a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.

TCGP MP: $2.34

Hidsnake: Anyone here that sound in the background? HOLY SHIT IT’S A STAMPEDE OF COMMANDER PLAYERS.

Tok: Or it’s a pack of Johnnys running with playsets of [mtg_card]Eldrazi Displacer[/mtg_card] clutched tightly above their head.

#231: [mtg_card]Scrapheap Scrounger[/mtg_card] - Rare

2

Artifact Creature - Construct

Scrapheap Scrounger can't block.

1B, Exile another creature card from your graveyard: Return Scrapheap Scrounger from your graveyard to the battlefield.

3/2

TCGP MP: $1.62

Tok: Hard to completely get rid of. I think it’s an ok aggro card.

#234: [mtg_card]Skysovereign, Consul Flagship[/mtg_card] - Mythic

5

Legendary Artifact - Vehicle

Flying

Whenever Skysovereign, Consul Flagship enters the battlefield or attacks, it deals 3 damage to target creature or planeswalker an opponent controls.

Crew 3.

6/5

TCGP MP: $6.29

Hidsnake: It’s a colorless, flying [mtg_card]Inferno Titan[/mtg_card]. This is really freaking good and a lot of decks will be able to play it. At $4-$5, this is a pretty reasonable price.

Tok: I don’t actually think crew is a bad mechanic. It will be interesting to see if crew is good enough for standard, but this may make it to standard regardless of the viability of crew.

#235: [mtg_card]Smuggler's Copter[/mtg_card] - Rare

2

Artifact - Vehicle

Flying

Whenever Smuggler's Copter attacks or blocks, you may draw a card. If you do, discard a card.

Crew 1.

3/3

TCGP MP: $8.50

Tok: Its a 3/3 flyer on turn 2 and if you have creatures to play on curve it may be good in limited.

Hidsnake: This thing has exploded in price since we started working on this. Lotta hype around this card.

Tok: I forgot there are some one drops who care about artifacts. This can turn on (oh my) [mtg_card]Toolcraft Exemplar[/mtg_card] or [mtg_card]Inventor's Apprentice[/mtg_card] to attack turn 2 and if the board stalls then they can crew it to fly the copter over blockers. I think I will update my assessment to, possibly playable in standard. (Fanfare) Oh, yeah it's also a looter in case you need to fuel madness.

#243: [mtg_card]Blooming Marsh[/mtg_card] - Rare

Land

Blooming Marsh enters the battlefield tapped unless you control two or fewer other lands.

T: Add B or G to your mana pool.

TCGP MP: $5.00

Hidsnake: All the duals seem a little high in price. Some do see play in Modern, but buying at over $3.50 is probably too much.

Tok: Opens up some more aggro deck options in modern.

#244: [mtg_card]Botanical Sanctum[/mtg_card] - Rare

Land

Botanical Sanctum enters the battlefield tapped unless you control two or fewer other lands.

T: Add G or U to your mana pool.

TCGP MP: $4.05

See [mtg_card]Blooming Marsh[/mtg_card].

#245: [mtg_card]Concealed Courtyard[/mtg_card] - Rare

Land

Concealed Courtyard enters the battlefield tapped unless you control two or fewer other lands.

T: Add W or B to your mana pool.

TCGP MP: $4.31

See [mtg_card]Blooming Marsh[/mtg_card].

#246: [mtg_card]Inspiring Vantage[/mtg_card] - Rare

Land

Inspiring Vantage enters the battlefield tapped unless you control two or fewer other lands.

T: Add R or W to your mana pool.

TCGP MP: $4.29

See [mtg_card]Blooming Marsh[/mtg_card].

#247: [mtg_card]Inventors' Fair[/mtg_card] - Rare

Land

At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control three or more artifacts, you gain 1 life.

T: Add C to your mana pool.

4, T, Sacrifice Inventors' Fair: Search your library for an artifact card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library. Activate this ability only if you control three or more artifacts.

TCGP MP: $1.24

Hidsnake: I suspect this will be added into Lantern Control in Modern. I haven't seen a list for Thopter Sword recently, but it could also fit there if the deck is designed for it. The mana cost for sacing is too high for affinity, so I doubt we could see it there. If people feel really crazy you could see it in [mtg_card]Tezzeret, Agent of Bolas[/mtg_card] Control decks for both Modern and Legacy.

#249: [mtg_card]Spirebluff Canal[/mtg_card] - Rare

Land

Spirebluff Canal enters the battlefield tapped unless you control two or fewer other lands.

T: Add U or R to your mana pool.

TCGP MP: $6.28

See [mtg_card]Blooming Marsh[/mtg_card].

#265(*): [mtg_card]Chandra, Pyrogenius[/mtg_card] - Mythic

4RR

Planeswalker - Chandra

[+2]: Chandra, Pyrogenius deals 2 damage to each opponent.

[-3]: Chandra, Pyrogenius deals 4 damage to target creature.

[-10]: Chandra, Pyrogenius deals 6 damage to target player and each creature he or she controls.

Loyality: 5

TCGP MP: $8.55

Hidsnake: Lol. This is shit.

Tok: Why does this exist? It’s at least playable in kitchen table magic unlike the sad excuse of an elf down below...

#270(*): [mtg_card]Nissa, Nature’s Artisan[/mtg_card] - Mythic

4GG

Planeswalker - Nissa

[+1]: You gain 3 life.

[-4]: Reveal the top two cards of your library. Put all land cards from among them onto the battlefield and the rest into your hand.

[-12]: Creatures you control get +5/+5 and gain trample until end of turn.

Loyalty: 5

TCGP MP: $8.66

Hidsnake: Well, at least Wizard’s didn’t lie. These two planeswalkers are really bad and completely unplayable in Standard. Kudos.

Tok: I originally had “Fillion.gif” as my only comment, but it was brought to my attention my comment may be confusing so I’ll expand on it. This card isn’t good. I don’t mean isn’t good for standard, or isn’t good in limited, or isn’t good at kitchen table magic, I mean the card is a waste of the cardboard it’s printed on. You’ll get more value from the warmth burning her will provide than by playing her.
