This week we have Pro Tour to contend with in Magic Monies. You will likely hear more about it tomorrow when I write up tomorrow’s Decks of the Week article. But today we can talk about the price changes caused by Pro Tour.
Pro Tour Bounces
The biggest winner of the tournament was [mtg_card]Voldaren Pariah[/mtg_card]. The card was a lightly talked about bulk rare the mildly blew up. The thing is, this card never made it to the Top 8 tables. But UB Zombies had some good matches on camera Day 1 and 2. Voldaren Pariah was one of the big cards in that deck. Worth keeping an eye on this card if Zombies becomes a stronger deck. What makes it a good card in this particular deck is that half the cards have their own built-in reanimator clause.
[mtg_card]Emrakul, the Promised End[/mtg_card] was the card of the final day with 8 copies in the Top 8. I would have never expected that. Play it and the game ends. I wasn’t sure at the high CMC that card was going to viable, but that seems very incorrect. Looks to be a build around for its time in Standard.
Two utility cards that were most played amongst the Top 8 were [mtg_card]Traverse the Ulvenwald[/mtg_card] and [mtg_card]Kozilek’s Return[/mtg_card]. I was speculating on Traverse the Ulvenwald at around $2, and that looks to be paying off now. I think this still has some room to grow in price if it can find some homes in Modern, possibly in decks like Temur Delver and Kiki Chord. Kozilek’s Return hit big in the Emerge decks where cards could be cast with Emerge and trigger a Kozilek’s Return to blow out a board for free. Also it saw play in the ramp decks looking to cast an [mtg_card]Emrakul, the Promised End[/mtg_card]. A sharp spike on this to $10 shouldn’t have been unexpected with the Emerge tech widely known. In fact, $10 might not even be the ceiling for this card since it’s a mythic rare.
Few other cards got some increases worth noting. [mtg_card]Grim Flayer[/mtg_card] made the Top 8 in the [mtg_card]BG Delirium[/mtg_card] deck and did much better over the weekend than I think most would have anticipated. [mtg_card]Ishkanah, Grafwidow[/mtg_card] got much more play across the board, but was a featured card in this deck as well. [mtg_card]Prized Amalgam[/mtg_card] had a very good first day in UB Zombies, before tailing off and not making the Top 8. Lastly, [mtg_card]Elder Deep-Fiend[/mtg_card] made waves in two Temur Emerge decks as the leading Emerge card in those decks.
Of Buyouts and Reserve List
There are two cards I need to bring up because of spikes occurring. First is [mtg_card]Lure of Prey[/mtg_card], a reserve list card that had the biggest percentage gain of the weekend. I can’t really attribute this one to a buyout. There are plenty of copies online at around $4, but the TCGPlayer Market Price is still only $1.11 showing there isn’t any demand for this card at all. Honestly, not sure what’s going on here. Looks like a bad buyout gone bad.
The other card worth a few more words this week is [mtg_card]Mishra’s Bauble[/mtg_card], which is up to $33. It’s a 4x in Suicide Zoo, which is a “cheap” Modern deck. Sell, sell, and sell. This is a likely reprint target of a card that I’m not even sure can hold at this price. That’s not even looking at possible bannings on the deck due to the consistent speed of Suicide Zoo. There are lots of reasons to get out of the card ASAP.
