Magic Monies - 5/9/16

This week in Magic Monies, Jeff Hoogland is breaking Modern as we know it. Be prepared. There will be consequences for this.

Big winner this week was [mtg_card]Nahiri, the Harbinger[/mtg_card]. You can blame this one on Jeff Hoogland. Who took this Kiki-Chord list into a 5-0 in Modern League. He did this after a similar deck made top 32 in a SCG Modern Open event. He had to spend an entire day defending this deck on twitter to the point he actually appeared angry. It 5-0’s a MTGO league here people. Just to spite them, he ran a total different Jeskai Control deck with it which also 5-0’d. I’m going to be honest. I don’t know where to place this card anymore. If the card is this good in MULTIPLE Modern decks, it probably is worth more than $20 over long term. If you need it for Standard, it is quite possible this is the lowest you will see it for quite some time. I know I’m probably all-in on buys if I can grab some at around $60 a set. The card’s versatility is really showing itself off in Modern.

The other card worth a look is [mtg_card]Brain in a Jar[/mtg_card]. This got a rise from a fairly brewtastic budget MTGO Standard deck. While not a very good deck, it became very popular online. I don’t see long term value here. Sellout now at the very high $1.50 price. Worth noting that the way this card is worded, you can resolve both sides of split cards with Fuse ability (but not old split cards ones without Fuse) using Brain in a Jar. This is because spells with Fuse have the line about being able to cast both sides from your hand, which Brain in a Jar does. Old split cards can cast either side off Brain in a Jar but not both, similarly to [mtg_card]Isochron Scepter[/mtg_card]. Sometimes broken combos like this can show up in a metagame and take a format by storm, pun totally intended. I doubt this is the card to do that, but keep an eye out just in case.

Decks of the Week - 4/12/16

So this week was SCG Baltimore, which had major events in Standard, Modern, and Legacy. Since it's a new rotation, most of the decks will focus on the quality and quantity of the decks played at the tournament over the brewtastic decks you find in your regular IQs.
